The 2008 PE Survey Says...

Thank you to everyone for filling out and returning the "BEPE Survey" sent to every parent/guardian in grades 3, 4, and 5. Of the 480 surveys sent out 211 were returned (44%) as of 5-23-08. Below I've included the following percent totals for the various "Yes" and "No" questions, and parent feedback comments regarding both the "website" and "expectations / concerns". 10. What are your expectations / concerns about PE at BES:
-That the kids have safe + healthy activities to grow up with.
-I expect my son to learn how to be active daily as part of a "normal" days activity.
-Needs to be more than once a week!
-I would just like my child to get some good physical activity during the week.
-Burn energy to be able to focus in class. Learn about the importance of exercise.
-Try at everything and be good. A good sport and be in good shape.
-To make exercise enjoyable.
-I have no concerns about the PE program at BES. I think Mr. Persse does a wonderful job wit the kids and is a wonderful and motivated fitness teacher.
-Healthy choices for dining out.
-Children should have more physical activity throughout the week.
-No concerns. Keep up the good work J
-"Think and then Writes" are a great way to re-direct children. Some infractions were a little petty but I understand why they are necessary.
-Learn and develop tools for healthy living.
-I have a very active child and my only concern is that at certain times in the curriculum he may not expend as much energy as he needs to.
-Teaching nutrition from somebody at school has a bigger impact than from parents at home.
-Good program no concerns.
-Keeping the kids physically and mentally healthy.
-I think Mr. Persse is an excellent teacher and has a great program!
-Keep my child interested and excited about PE and being active in daily life.
-I am concerned about the msg being sent to the children when they are being told they are overweight & out of shape. It has not been a positive experience this year.
-Just that kids are getting good exercise.
-Teach enjoyment of physical activity. Very impressionable age. Want them to enjoy staying active.
-It seems that my child is greatly enjoying PE classes, despite that he is probably far from the athletic type. I hope that the PE class keeps him interested in doing exercises.
-Mr. Persse does a good job of motivating the kids and providing useful information about the importance of an active lifestyle.
-Kids have fun and I don't have any concerns.
-That my child learns healthy habits.
-I think the PE program is very well run. I am also pleased with the BMI testing program. It is essential that parents are made aware of their child's health, even when many choose to ignore it. Hopefully, it will help families make better choices when it comes to nutrition and fitness. Thanks for all you do, and for your dedication to our kids! J
-Just that my child has a safe and fun experience.
I expect that my child will be encouraged to participate in a variety of physical activities that are safe + fun. I wonder why there are no safety harnesses on the rockwall although I'm happy there are mats.
-I expect my child to go to PE and learn about healthy choices + about ways to stay fit but I also expect my child to have FUN in doing so Fitness doesn't have to be so military, it can be made fun and enjoyable where the kids to want to drag their feet on PE days.
-I hear excitement in my son's voice when he talks of exercises he's done in PE. I also hear him talk of things he's learned about health and our bodies. He's active + positive. Thank you for that!
-That children get plenty of exercise, but make it fun. We have 5 children; we play baseball, kickball, tag, etc. Our kids love it, because it's fun. You can make a child do anything, when they think it's fun.
-For my daughter to have a fun and educational experience.
-My expectations are that the children learn good/safe ways to stay in shape and have fun.
-That my son gets ample time to stay fit/flexible through physical activity & learn about the human body & what fuels it.
-I expect my child to learn about being healthy and fit for life. He also learns to love PE. Thank you for everything.
-I like my child doing things at PE in school.
-I expect my child to learn about fitness in a safe & fun environment.
-None. Play dodge ball the right way?? No bookwork for PE! Kids hate it!
-Keep up the great work.
-My son, who is in 5th grade, doesn't care for the vocab or PE homework. I have seen it myself. I didn't care for it either. I prefer tests or quizzes on sports on if they were listening in class. I like physical stuff it's more important than writing or looking up to see what it means.
-I just want my child to get the most out of her experience and have a great time learning to be healthy and active.
-That my son enjoys the activities and isn't pushed to hard.
-1) Hope kids will be able to complete make up days for the Tue/Thurs Recess Lunch Runs! 2) Is there a sports Dan? (4 weeks left) 3) More recognition should have gone home that spoke to Mr. Persse's award. We read about it in the Northern Light. Well Done!
-I hope that my child will continue to enjoy PE.
-Our concern is the focus on the BMI. I feel that educating the kids about it is good as far as testing or tracking the BMI at this age it is not necessary + I am concerned that girls at this age really shouldn't feel any pressure about it. I feel that it is up to the parents + the child's doctor to worry about it.
-I expect my child to learn about fitness in a safe and fun environment.
-To teach children that it is important to find fun and enjoyable ways to make daily exercises part of your life routine.
-Expectations are to encourage kids to increase activities, which I feel, has been accomplished!
-Safety conscious for the kids.
-I would like to see more time spent playing tag type games or games not within a certain unit. Also, and this has nothing to do w/ PE but maybe you could help with this, I think that there needs to be more recess time. _ hour for lunch and recess is too short. Either my child doesn't eat all of her food so that she can go play, she eats too fast to get out, or she eats slowly and doesn't go out at all. All of these promote poor health. If the school day was 15-20 min longer than that would allow more needed recess time. Maybe you could pass this on to the "powers that be".
-I think Mr. Persse is doing a great job with the kids.
-We hope activities are suited for students with motor skill issues and don't make our child feel as if he is singled out.
-I would like to see more emphasis put on child participation and good attitude/behavior rather than times and numbers completed. Thanks.
-I am concerned that, yes, it's very important to focus on our country's obesity epidemic, if we are not careful we may push a lot of children the other way and create even more eating disorders as they grow. It's a very fine balance.
-Expectations are that the children are safe and have fun while exercising.
-To have fun activities with rewarding outcomes and learn healthy habits with a positive experience.
-Mr. Persse is a great PE teacher. He is the kind of teacher that inspires children to do the best. Great work.
-Just that they get to learn and practice school sports, learn teamwork and how to work as a team.
-That my daughter will lose weight. That she will become more physically active and physically fit.
-Learning about physical education and its benefits towards a healthy lifestyle.
-I just want the children to have fun.
-The teacher has got a great knack for teaching. Thanks for being a good role model + good luck with the next step in the process of the PE educator award!
-My expectations are for parents & student realize how important it is to keep & sustain a healthy, fit body for a long time.
-The fitness program should be more fun in nature and enjoyable. According to my child the PE Central
Challenge is pressurizing.
-Just want my child to be an active participate thx.
-That he has fun. I don't have any concerns at this time.
-Setting and teaching a healthy/active way of life.
-How bout bike riding excursion, dance, tennis, obstacle courses, walks, understanding nutrition and how to burn it. Ask the children what they would like. Maybe girls 1 thing and boys another. There not exactly the same.
-For my child to learn how his body works and how to better take care of it.
-My expectations are the children have and learn good fitness skills.
-I do not have any concerns. My expectations would be that the children learn about the benefits of physical activity and how to assess their level of fitness be healthy stay healthy.
-I was happy to find they do PE more often up here. Where we moved from (CA), they get 1 hr. per week!
-To teach children about the benefits of exercise and nutrition.
-Healthy eating habits along with phys. Ed be encouraged. J
-Always keeping the kids excited about staying healthy through activities.
-My son is an overweight child and I feel he is expected to perform equally to his normal weight peers. He loves to run and play but some activities for long periods is very strenuous on him physically.
-My expectation is that my son learns a variety of physical activities safely. I want him to enjoy physical activity and I want him to learn about what healthy choices are.
-My other son seems to enjoy PE he's in 3rd grade. As for 5th grader, Fitfolio somewhat seems unimportant. Doesn't motivate him. I think trying to be good at it or enjoy the sport motivates him instead of doing fitness homework cuz, it makes it fun. Makes sense? Trying to learn getting to be good at it makes it challenging.
-The definition writing took a lot of time away from running around outside. I don't think this activity is beneficial. (Editor note: Parent is referring to Fitfolio homework stating as well, "Goals yes")
-We expect the program to help our child develop good physical habits at an early age.
-I hope he has fun exercising. Thank you for all your hard work.
-My child is fit and safe.
-We are very impressed with Mr. Persse and his knowledge about fitness and sports.
-No concerns. I think BES has a well-rounded program.
-I would like to see the importance of stretching before exercise. Also the importance of cooling after exercise to prevent cramping and aching. I do know these are young children but I feel the most basic fundamentals, are very important to teach as a routine to promote good exercise habits later.
-Keep up the good work! Love the program.
-I believe that the student's teachers should have more information on what goes on during class. I was very confused on how Fitfolio was supposed to work. My son plays soccer year around, so I don't have any concerns on him being not active enough. He also eats very health.
-To build excitement for physical activities, and to be health aware. My child loves tennis and basketball and tries to play them as much as possible.
-I really like the program. My only wish would be PE everyday.
-After learning & seeing for myself the P.E. program taught at the BES I have no expectations or concerns. I am completely satisfied with my children's PE teachers.
-Learning to be physically active and learn new activities. To learn teamwork as well as good attitudes + to enjoy sports.

I would like to close by again thanking everyone for taking the time to respond to the survey.
