
The Purpose of this Unit Theme is to provide students with the basic skills necessary to feel comfortable playing activities that incorporate a ball for the purposes of dribbling, passing and shooting. Within this 8-day unit students will progress from practicing independent basketball-related skills to working with small groups to develop the basketball skills necessary for success.
To meet the standard (rubric score of 3) set by the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) for Health and Fitness and their Grade Level Expectations a physically educated student will know and be able to do for:
3rd Grade:
- Hand dribble while moving (during a skill-drill activity)
- Uses one-handed push-shot when shooting for a basket (during skill-drill activity)
4th Grade:
- Hand dribble at various speeds with control (during a skill
drill activity)
- Uses one-handed push-shot and
backboard when shooting for a basket (during skill-drill activity)
5th Grade:
- Hand dribble against an opponent (during a skill-drill activity)
- Uses one-handed push-shot and backboard when shooting for a basket (during 3-with-3 game activity)

Summative assessment of their skills will be taken on day 8
The 1/2-mile run/jog test measuring the Health-related component cardiorespiratory endurance and muscular endurance will be concluded, and the shuttle-run pre-testing for muscular strength will begin on day 3. The Shuttle-run fitness assessment will be practiced every day during this unit, and some of the traverse-rock climbing unit.
After the 1-minute Run Club warm-up students will learn how to stretch (straight leg wall stretch) and strengthen (heel raises) the gastrocnemius muscle group while learning function, location, and number of muscles.
