January 31 - February 5
AP Students
Parents of AP students: Every student taking an AP class must pay $13.00 (a portion of their exam fee) towards each AP class they are taking. This is part of the total cost and is needed now to order the exams, which are taken in May. Please have students make payments in the office with Mrs. Nelson.
Senior Parents Financial Aid
If your student is interested in any type of school after graduation, students and parents need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, FAFSA. Students and parents should be getting a signature PIN now and filling out the worksheet. It can be submitted via the Internet now. Schools have a deadline for receiving the FAFSA, and the sooner it is received the better the chance of receiving funds. To apply for the PIN number you need to go to www.fafsa.ed.gov There is a FAFSA on the web worksheet that can be printed out from the website and/or I have made copies that are in the career center. Remember that when you submit the FAFSA your place in line is locked, so you can be eligible for grants and other funds. The sooner you do this the better. This is not just a 4 year school financial aid form, this is for any type of after high school learning.

This is due to the focused efforts of the team members: Jaclyn Adams, Aaron Ballard, Alex Bullock, Brandon Calvert, Ben Green, Brett Mattson, Nathan Rasmussen-Tangen, Aaron Sessions, Forest Sweeney and Izaac Wilkowski. Through their studying of the game and their team work, each member has become a better player. We have the potential to take 2nd place in the NW Chess League. Finally, we will be hosting the Washington State High School Chess Championship on Friday, February 11 and Saturday, February 12.
Senior Projects
Parents, please keep informed on your son’s or daughter’s senior project progress; it’s a grad requirement. Ask them where they are in the process. All seniors should have had their letter of intent approved by November 3, 2010. For all those who have completed their letters, they are either finishing their twenty hours or if they have done that are completing their self-evaluation essays and compiling evidence. Also, mentors should be filling out the required evaluation form. Furthermore, all seniors should be working on their portfolios now, even though they are not officially due until spring. Remember, even though they are seniors, frequent reminders may be necessary.
Art Studio
Look for Open Studio opportunities in the Art Room each week. I will try to keep the room open for 2 hour stretches once a week. I plan to alternate 3-5:00 P.M. with 6-8:00 P.M. Students can make up missed days, catch up on projects, or just enjoy a longer stretch of time to work on projects. Only Art students are allowed in the Art Room during Open Studio.
Homework Center
Homework Center is up and running. So if your student would like some help with any of their studies please encourage them to seek out help from the homework center. The times may change, but the morning times are 7:30 to 8:10 and the afternoon times are 3:00 to 4:30. The center will run Mondays through Thursdays, and it will be in the high school library. We want to strongly encourage freshmen and sophomores to get help when needed, but everyone is welcome.

Career Tips for Students
Figuring out what to do for work is a process that happens over time, rather than a single one-time decision. Career Planning is a developmental, thought-provoking process. You must examine yourself: your interests, your temperament, and your values. You then need to think about what you want in a job.
1. Establish tentative personal/career goals
2. Discuss your career goals with counselors, teachers, and family.
3. Explore occupations and gather career information.
4. Conduct Informational Interviews
5. Develop a Resume of Activities, Honors, and Achievements.
6. Assemble a list of admission requirements and qualifications.
7. Visit college or other education/training sites.

SAT Answer
The correct answer is E. If P is an odd integer, then P minus 2 and P squared are odd integers. Similarly, choices C and D are odd integers. Since an odd integer subtracted from another odd integer is always an even integer, P squared minus P is even.
